What is a color palette?
A color palette is a small set of colors that are chosen to work together. Most projects need only three to six: a main color, one or two supporting colors, a neutral for backgrounds and text, and sometimes a bright accent for buttons or highlights. Starting from a fixed palette keeps a website, logo, or presentation looking consistent.
How to use this color code list
- Choose a color family with the buttons at the top, or type a color name into the search box.
- Pick the code format you need: HEX, RGB, or HSL.
- Click a color. The code is copied to your clipboard, so you can paste it straight into your editor.
HEX, RGB and HSL: which one should you use?
All three formats describe the same color in different ways. Here is crimson written all three ways:
#DC143C(HEX) is the most common format on the web. It is short and works in CSS, Figma, Photoshop, and almost every design tool.rgb(220, 20, 60)(RGB) lists the amount of red, green, and blue from 0 to 255. It is handy in code when you want to add transparency withrgba().hsl(348, 83%, 47%)(HSL) gives hue, saturation, and lightness. It is the easiest format to adjust by hand, because making a color lighter or darker only means changing one number.
Autumn color palette
Autumn colors are warm and earthy: rust, burnt orange, mustard, olive, and coffee brown. They suit blogs, cafe branding, and anything that should feel cozy.
Summer color palette
Summer palettes are bright and playful. Coral, orange, sunny yellow, fresh green, and a clear blue work well for event posters, social media posts, and kids' content.
Winter color palette
Winter colors lean cool and calm: deep navy, slate blue, icy teal, and soft whites. They give dashboards, business sites, and presentations a clean, focused look.
Spring color palette
Spring palettes use soft pastels such as blush pink, mint, butter yellow, and sky blue. They feel light and friendly, which makes them a good fit for wedding stationery, lifestyle blogs, and beauty brands.
Blue color palette
Blue is one of the most trusted colors in design, and it is used by banks, software companies, and health brands. This palette runs from a deep midnight shade to a pale sky tone, so you can build a full interface from a single hue.
Green color palette
Green suggests nature, growth, and calm. From dark forest to soft mint, these shades work for wellness, finance, food, and sustainability projects.
Tips for combining colors
- Use the 60-30-10 rule. Let a dominant color cover about 60% of the design, a secondary color about 30%, and an accent about 10%.
- Check text contrast. Body text should have a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 against its background to stay readable for everyone.
- Stay in one family first. Several shades of one hue always look harmonious. Add a second hue only when you need something to stand out.
- Test on real screens. Colors can look different on a phone, a laptop, and a printout, so check your choice on the devices your audience uses.
Frequently asked questions
Are these colors free to use?
Yes. Color codes are just numbers, so you can use them in personal and commercial projects without credit.
How do I use a HEX code in CSS?
Paste it as the value of a color property, for example color: #DC143C; or background-color: #DC143C;.
What is the difference between a color palette and a color scheme?
A palette is the actual set of colors you picked. A color scheme is the rule behind the choice, such as complementary, analogous, or monochromatic. This list helps you find the individual colors for either one.
Why do my colors look different in print?
Screens mix light (RGB), while printers mix ink (CMYK). Bright and neon shades are especially hard to reproduce on paper, so ask your printer for a proof if the exact color matters.
